"Father of New Orleans divers", Sam was one of the first professional divers to work the Mississippi River and the first diver on off-shore oil jobs in the Gulf of Mexico along the Louisiana coast.

According to an October 17, 1964 article from The Daily Standard (Sikeston, Missouri), Sam was part of the crew that helped raised the USS Cairo, which was sunk on December 12, 1862 while clearing mines during the Civil War.

He was also the owner and president of Sam J. Bongiovanni Marine Diver, Inc. His beloved wife, Katie, who he called "a doll", was the vice-president.

OBITUARY: Sam J. Bongiovanni on Sunday, August 25, 1985 at 9 o'clock p.m. Beloved husband of the late Katie Tramonte Bongiovanni. Age 80. A native of Gramercy, La. and a resident of Jefferson, La. for the past 40 years.
