Bessie was born with her twin Jesse at the Keeley Institute when the Herman Smiths were living in an Englewood cave that was located about where the Swedish Hospital parking facility is located. The Smiths were gardeners who produced vegetables and sold them. While young, Bessie was the life of the party and very jolly. She married Leonard and they were truck farmers on the lower Clear Creek, having bought the Farrell farm. Bessie was a fantastic cook and hosted a few large family parties each year on holidays Thanksgiving, Christmas and Independence Day. In later years they accumulated more land and produced corn and wheat. After paying off their debt, they became prosperous.
