ABBIE K (KIRLIN) CRAIG
Abbie, sometimes spelled Abby, was the daughter of Mary Ann (Myers) and David Kirlin. She was born and raised in the New Boston, IL area. She married DR. Augustus L Craig, son of Clara (Reeves) and DR. William D. Craig. According to marriage records they were married in Aledo, IL on May 13, 1879. In 1880 Abbie and Augustus are making their home in Eliza living next door to Abbie's in-laws. Sometime after this the couple moved to Chicago and joined several other extended family members and friends from Mercer County already living there.

In 1900 Abbie is listed in the census by herself living on North Adams ST in a Boarding House: Name Abbie Craig, Age 40, Birth Date Jan 1860, Birthplace Illinois, Home in 1900: Chicago Ward 12, Cook County, Illinois, Race White, Gender Female, Relation to Head of House Lodger, Marital Status Married, Marriage Year 1883, Years Married 17, Father's Birthplace Illinois, Mother's Birthplace Illinois, Mother How many children: 0. Her husband Augustus is listed as living in Ward 18 on West Adams ST at the Illinois Charitable and Ear Infirmary, working there as a House Physician.

Abbie's father David had passed away in 1892 at the age of 68. In 1900 her mother Mary Ann had been living in Kansas with Abbie's older sister Kate. Sometime after the 1900 census Abbie and Augustus moved to a different, smaller boarding house together on Lake Ave next to Abbie's cousin Frank Ellet and his family. Her widowed mother, Mary Ann has also moved in with them.

In 1908 Levi Myers, brother of Mary Ann (Myers) Kirlin visited in Chicago from his home in Portland, Oregon on his way to Mercer County, IL. He had living in Canada before that where he had was appointed Vice-Counsel to Victoria, B.C., by President Harrison in 1892. During his journey back to Mercer County he kept a travel journal of everyone he visited. He wrote this about his visit with Abbie's family; "May 15 - I heard a Turtle Dove & a Baltimore Oriole before I got out of bed. It is bright & warm this morning. After breakfast all we men went up to the city. Mike & I went to Dr. Craig's to see Mary Kirlin & Abbie. We found them well & expecting us. Mary has not aged as much as I expected to find that she had. Her hair is not much greyer than it was 10 yrs ago, & she moves about the house quite as she used to. Her eyesight is so that she cannot read, but she can see enough to get around the room very well. They are boarding in a flat -3d- story with Mrs. Henderson, formerly of Aledo - a widow whose mother & daughter live with her. Mike went away at 11 o'clock, as he had agreed to lunch with Lloyd Rhodes Myers, & they went to the base ball game afterwards. I staid to lunch with Abbie & Mary & came away at 4 p.m. Mrs. Frank Ellett, who lives in the next house to the Craig's, made us all a call in the afternoon. She is a strong woman mentally and physically, & has made Frank a good wife. Their daughter Nellie is in an office up town & I did not see her. I came down to Myron A's at 5 o'clock. The day has been quite warm & I was glad to get my coat off."

Abbie's mother Mary died the following year on the 6th Oct while still living with them in Chicago. She was taken back to Aledo and buried with her husband David. In 1910 Abbie and Augustus are still living at the boarding house with Maria Henderson and her daughter but in 1920 they have their own home on Ellis Ave. Six years later Abbie passes away at the age of 69.
