Edna Lorena (Young) Bryce, a retired East Side florist died January 4, 1994, leaving a legacy of service to the Columbus business and civic communities.

She was born January 31, 1904 in Fairhope, Alabama and came to Columbus in 1926.

Scores of plaques and other honors, including the Mayor's Medal grace the walls of her home. Education and public service were trademarks of Bryce. ,

Edna opened the family's floral business in 1934. The business was started in the family living room but is best remembered as the shop at 709 E. Long Street. With no experience, training or resources Edna built that business into a profitable institution, Because of her tireless efforts with both the business and the community she was affectionately known as "The Flower Lady".

Bryce was married to Collin Bryce Sr., a naturalized citizen from Trinidad who played a minor role in the floral business until his death in 1968.

After retiring from the floral business in 1979, Edna worked a few years as a community liaison with the Pepsi Bottling Co., one of the many roles in which she advocated on behalf of blacks and the community.

She was active in civic and social organizations affiliated with the National Association of Colored Women's Clubs.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Mrs. Bryce served as president of the Mount Vernon Avenue Improvement Association, a group instrumental in the development of the Mount Vernon Plaza.

Edna had allies in the political ranks, including Environmental Court Judge Richard C. Pfeiffer Jr., former City Councilman Jerry Hammond, county Commissioner Dorothy Teater and former Mayor Buck Rinehart. She felt that whether in the business, political or civic arena, his mother's philosophy was consistent: "If you treated people honestly, decently and with respect, they would reciprocate."

She is survived sons, Collin Bryce II, Colderick A. Bryce; daughters, Colleen Bryce Mitchell and Mignonne Whitlow.
