Frank Barthel, 91, of Watertown, SD, passed away Monday April 11, 2016 at his residence.

Memorial services will be 11:30 a.m., Monday, April 18, 2016, with visitation one hour prior to the service, at Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel. Father Paul Rutten will be the celebrant.

Military Honors will be conducted by the American Legion Codington County Post 17 and the SD Army National Guard Military Honors Team at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown.

Ray Barthel, brother of Frank, will be the urn bearer.


Frank John Barthel was born August 27, 1924 in Toronto, South Dakota to Frank John and Christina (Aljets) Barthel. Frank grew up in the Deuel County area.

He helped farm until he joined the United States Army on January 10, 1946. During World War II, he was attached to the 317th Troop Carrier Group which was one of the most highly decorated troop carrier units of the United States Army Air Forces. He was honorably discharged on February 19, 1947.

Frank married Mae Simon and to this union, six children were born.

He worked for Park Grant as a semi-driver. He hauled crude oil from New Castle, Wyoming to Denver, Colorado. He also worked for Kimberly Clark Corporation, and retired after 30 years. He loved to drive and was on the roads for many years. He spent a lot of time traveling in SD, ND and Canada. In 1984, he opened Frank’s Sales, where he sold vehicles, paneling, and furniture. He had a passion for selling. He sold many cars, trucks and vans over the 30 year span of his business. He always had a car deal going on of one kind or another. He loved to go to car shows and auctions of any kind. He was a real “Wheeler Dealer”.

Frank is survived by his children, Jack (Judy) Barthel of Watertown, Jim (Nancy) Barthel of Watertown, Joe (Janet) Barthel of West Des Moines, IA, Jerry (Vickie) Barthel of Lake Norden, June (Mike) Wenande of Mitchell and Jeff (Becky) Barthel of Watertown; his special friend, Jane Boettcher of Watertown; his close friend, Cody Hinkelman; his 13 grandchildren; 14 great--grandchildren; three great - great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his ex-wife, Mae; his brother, John (Katherine) Barthel; and his sister-in-law, Doreen.
