Hon. J. Ed. Belch, one of the ablest and most popular men in the State, especially in Central Missouri, died at his home in Jefferson City on Saturday evening last, the 25th instant, of valvular disease of the heart. Mr. Belch was a native of Pennsylvania, came to Missouri in 1856, and was about 51 years of age at the time of his death. He was member of the State Senate in 1872, Speaker of the lower house of the General Assembly in 1878, and a prominent candidate before the convention for Congress against Dick Bland in 1882, being beaten by only one vote. Mr. Belch was a lawyer by profession, in politics a firm and unswerving Democrat. He was a genial companion, a whole souled gentleman, a true friend and an able man.
