In 1943, she graduated magna cum laude from High Point University where she taught for one semester after her graduation. She earned a Master of Arts from Appalachian State University in 1951. From 1943 to 1965, she taught English and math at Kernersville, Hanes, and Gray High Schools. In 1965, she joined the faculty at Parkland High, where she served as English Department chair, retiring in June of 1983.
Having spent 40 years as a teacher, Martha touched many lives and stayed in touch with many of her students. She enjoyed any excuse to visit with teaching colleagues or students, from attending class reunions or just bumping into a student as she made her way around the Winston area.
Mrs. Walker was a member of Beta Mu chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, joining in 1954. She was an active member of her church, Maple Springs United Methodist, where she taught Sunday school for many years. She and her husband enjoyed collecting antiques and traveling to the nooks and crannies of the Southeastern US.
Mrs. Walker is survived by her nephew, Grant Bullard (spouse Anne) and their four children of Brevard, NC; nephew, Tom Clark (spouse Jennifer) and their two girls, of Monroe, Connecticut; Mary Elizabeth Connell (spouse Al) of Houston, Texas; and two nieces, of McComb, MS.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Patsy Bullard Reynolds.
There will be a celebration of life service at Arbor Acres, 1240 Arbor Rd., Winston-Salem in Piner Hall on May 23, 2022, at 11 a.m. Burial will be a private service for family at Forsyth Memorial Park at 2 p.m. that day.
Memorials may be made to Maple Springs United Methodist Church, 2569 Reynolda Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27106 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
