Max D. Smith, 81, recently of Chiloquin, Ore., passed away on Saturday, April 9, 2016, at Hearthstone Nursing Home in Medford, Ore.

Max was predeceased by his lovely bride of 55 years, F. Elaine (Wadman) Smith.

Max is survived by his five children, Jana (and Mark) Goodman of Butte Falls, Ore., Russ (and Patty) Smith of Eugene, Ore., Dawn (and John) Johnson of Jackson, Wyo., Justin (and Michelle) Smith of Seattle, Wash., and Keri Smith (and Murray Zimmer) of Kodiak, Alaska; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; innumerable nieces and nephews; and Elaine's brothers and sisters, to whom he was also very close. Max was a very loving man, a "favorite" to everyone and everyone felt they were his favorite.

Max was born in Klamath Falls, Ore., to Elmer Allen Smith and Edrie (McBride) Smith and was predeceased by his parents and all nine of his brothers and sisters.

He served two years in the Army prior to his marriage to Elaine in 1957 in Ogden, Utah; their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan, Utah, temple. Max's first love was his family followed closely by music and the outdoors and a deep determination to work hard and be independent, all of which he deeply ingrained in each of his children. He loved camping and hunting and always seemed to work into those activities getting firewood. Mainly. he loved doing anything where he could spend time with his family and extended family. Max had a deep love for the Lord and served in many positions in the LDS Church. He worked in law enforcement, ranch work, drove heavy equipment, worked in the timber industry and drove a semi-truck later in life. After he retired, he and Elaine returned to Oregon, where he was at home.
