Curtis Edward Combs, 60, passed away on April 10, 2016. He was a resident of Indianapolis, IN. He was born on October 30, 1955 in Taylor, Michigan to the late Coral H. and Carlyne Adele (Moore) Combs.
He married Emma Lou (Reiling) Combs on September 13, 1974. He is survived by: his wife, Lou; son Daniel Combs with his wife Renee; son Matthew “Moose” Combs and his wife Ronda; grandchildren (in order of age) Stephanie, Alexander, Gabrielle, Nathaniel and Zachary. He was preceded in death by half-brother, Charles Edward “Ed” Combs. All of his siblings survive him: sister, Carla Combs Weisz; brothers, Carlton Combs and wife Suzanne; Chaney Combs and wife Linda; Christopher Combs and wife Cindy; Carter Combs and wife Jeffie; sisters, Cherie Combs Little and husband Tom; Cathleen Combs Anderson and husband Mark; and, Charlotte Combs Laizure and husband Rod. Also surviving are nieces and nephews and great and great-great nieces and nephews too numerous to list here.
Curt’s family moved to Independence, Missouri when he was seven years old, where he attended Spring Branch Elementary, Jim Bridger Middle School, William Chrisman Junior High, and William Chrisman High School, graduating in 1973. In high school he played football for two years and baseball in the Independence Kiwanis League for 3 years. All through high school he was in the choir, band and orchestra. He played the flute and piccolo and it was in band that he met his future wife, Lou.
As early as age 12 he began mowing yards and worked with his brothers bucking hay during the summers. In high school he worked in housekeeping at the Medical Center of Independence. After graduation he went to work at the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital as an orderly in the radiology department and emergency department. Eventually he moved to the material supply department. In 1977 he went to work for the Sutherland Lumber Company, who transferred him to Indianapolis in late 1983. Even though he was on a rapidly rising management track with the company, when they shut down operations in Indianapolis, he and Lou decided to stay in Indy to provide the stability their children needed. Over the next 18 years he worked for various lumbar companies in the Indy area. After being downsized from Koschnik Lumber in 2003 he learned of the chaplaincy program through IU Health, which he was accepted into in the fall of 2003. He then worked as an adjunct chaplain for IU Health until 2010 when he went to work for Indiana Organ Procurement Organization, as a family services counselor. After an eventual parting of ways from that organization, he went to work for PK USA in Shelbyville, IN as a shipping clerk and forklift operator. Along the way he also worked various part time jobs to ”keep food on the table”. Those jobs included retail clerking, cashiering, construction clean-up and school janitor.
Since 1985, Curtis has been an ordained minister with the Community of Christ. He originally held the office of Teacher, then Elder, served 3 years as pastor of the Indianapolis Branch Community of Christ, and in 1997 was ordained to his final and best calling as Evangelist/High Priest. Even though in the past few years he had not been as active in the local, physical congregations as he had been in previous years, he had a very active cyber ministry. He was in constant contact with friends and family around the world, offering his humor, support and ministry to any who were in need.
The celebration of Curt’s life will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2016, at 1:00 PM. This will take place at the Moller Road Community of Christ, 5150 Moller Road, Indianapolis, IN. There will be a meal provided by the Brownsburg and Moller Road Congregations. The family asks that you dress comfortably, no ties will be allowed (Curt hated them) and if you have something purple, please wear it. He loved the color purple. In lieu of flowers we ask that you donate to any of the following animal rescue organizations: The Exotic Feline Rescue Center in Brazil, IN.; Best Friends Animal Rescue in Utah; or any worthwhile no kill shelter where ever you live.
