Will was born in Willmar, Minnesota, 100 km west of Minneapolis. He came to Canada with his family at age 2. A photograph of him at about three years of age (dated July 1875) was taken in Winnipeg. The family came to British Columbia in 1898.
Will and Jean married on 23 May 1903 at The Manse, 400 East Cordova Street, Vancouver. Witnesses were Libbie MacBeth and Stella Davidson, both of Vancouver [B11373: 1903-09-049087]. At the time Will was a bookkeeper. Will was of the Church of England; Jean was Baptist (as also recorded in the undertakers’ records).
In 1908 Will was an office clerk. Will later became a commercial traveller. In 1917 he was the secretary to the Northwest Commercial Travellers’ Association [Henderson’s Directory]. Once he travelled to the Yukon. He would bring back souvenirs from his travels.
Will was a member of the Masons, and an avid Shriner throughout his adult life. A photograph shows him in a Shriner parade in “Dawson” (either Dawson, Yukon, or Dawson Creek, British Columbia) in 1910, riding on a water buffalo and wearing an elaborate Shriner costume.
In 1908 the family lived at 1325 Barclay Street, in the west end of Vancouver. The house was still standing in 2006, although covered in stucco, and in poor condition. After the birth of the children the family lived at 467 Inman Avenue, near Central Park in Burnaby. The 12-block intersecting street is called Burke Street, after William Burke. In 1928 they lived at 3825 Elsom Avenue, just east of Inman Avenue. Neither house is still standing.
Will died on 12 May 1928 of arteriosclerosis, from which he had suffered for two years [B13134: 1931-09-453170]. He was buried at Ocean View Cemetery, Burnaby, on May 17, 1928, in the Hunter family plot [Empire 34, towards NE corner]. Undertakers were Nunn & Thomson.
After Will’s death Jean lived for a time in Surrey. She then moved to Vancouver. She then moved to Beach Grove, Delta, on Enderby Street, near where her daughter would later live.
Jean died “at home” at 1625 West 10th Avenue, Vancouver of a cerebral haemorrhage [B13266: 1957-09-003827]. She was buried at Ocean View Cemetery, Burnaby, on March 22, 1957, in the Hunter family plot [Empire 34, towards NE corner]. Undertakers were Nunn & Thomson.
Today the family is remembered in Burke Street, which passes by the original farm, and Chaffey-Burke Elementary School. Burke Mountain is not named after him.
