Charles was the son of Charles Devinny and Marcia (Morton) Devinny. Charles, cowboy rancher and prospector came to Alberta in 1911 where he worked as a top cowhand at High River and Nanton. In 1917, he was riding for Pat Burns, and then three years later prospecting in British Columbia.

In 1930, he accepted the position as manager of Circle ranch, north of Patricia, for Pat Burns, buying property east of Patricia in 1934. He retired in 1940, spending most of the time at Bassano, Alberta where he died of heart failure.
