Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 22, 2016, at Renner-Wikoff Chapel in Urbana with the Rev. Todd Lafond and the Rev. Warren Lukens officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 21, at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Champaign.
Max was born Oct. 8, 1924, in Deland to parents John and Gertrude (Sparrow) Lukens. They preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were three sisters and seven brothers.
On Sept. 1, 1956, Max married Mildred Coad in Hidalgo. She survives. Also surviving are their children, Julia (Robert) Supple, Warren (Marcy) Lukens, Don Lukens and Lawrence Lukens; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Max attended Champaign Central High School. While still in school, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in World War II, earning two ribbons and two medals. After being honorably discharged, he started at JM Jones (SuperValu), where he worked for 31 years, retiring on his birthday in 1989.
He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene New Day. Max worked hard and was dedicated to his work and being a caregiver to his family; he was a whole-heart kind of man who gave all he had to whatever he was working on.
Max enjoyed working on puzzles, reading the Bible, singing and sharing funny songs and sayings with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed going on multiple vacations throughout his life with the most memorable vacation being going to Alaska for six weeks with his "honey" upon his retirement.
He was a selfless person and is going to be missed by all who knew and loved him. Memorial contributions may be made in Max's memory to Mayo Clinic or to The Church of the Nazarene.
