Thomas Nathan Murphy was born in Seattle, Washington, the son of George and Maime Murphy. As a young man he moved with his family to the Hollywood area of Los Angeles. He attended Hollywood High School and Los Angeles City College. Tom studied Electrical Engineering and began a long career with the General Electric Supply Company. In 1939, Tom married his first wife, Josephine and three years later moved to San Diego. He continued in the electrical business and after his retirement from GE, he founded his own company. Tom was extremely proud of his many years serving San Diego's youth through his nearly 40 years with the Uptown Optimist Club of San Diego.
