Wayne W. Verhein, age 82 of the Town of Wescott, Shawano, passed away Friday evening, April 15, 2016 at Crossroads Care Center in Weyauwega, Wisconsin.

Wayne was born July 3, 1933 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a son of the late August and Edna (Baum) Verhein. He attended school in Milwaukee and later attended Bay View High School. Following school he entered the United States Army. He served from 1953 until 1955, serving in the Armored Division. Upon returning from service, he worked at the Heil Company in Milwaukee where he met the love of his life, Geraldine Olsen. The couple was united in marriage on July 13, 1956 in Milwaukee. Geraldine preceded him in death on March 16, 2002.

Following their marriage the couple remained in Milwaukee. Along with working at the Heil Company, where he was a member of Operating Engineers 1398, Wayne also worked construction, and at County Stadium as a vendor. The couple owned and operated Verhein’s Place until retiring and moving to Shawano in 1982.

Wayne was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He was a world champion Bingo player and, in recent years, was known as the “King of Karaoke”. For many years, Wayne was actively involved with the Shawano AmVets Post #10. He served as Commander and as the Wisconsin Provost Marshall. Not only did Wayne serve his country, he also served fellow veterans by transporting them to their medical appointments.

Survivors include two sons, Steve Verhein and Boyd (Kristie) Verhein, both of Shawano; six grandchildren, Ariana Verhein, Brent Verhein, Steven Petry, Sarah Petry, Braden Verhein, and Akrin Verhein; his sister, Patricia Czerwinski of Milwaukee; and several nieces and nephews. Wayne was preceded in death by his brothers, Dick, Russ, Ken, Jerry, and Augie Verhein; and one sister, Barbara LaSavage.

A time to remember and celebrate the life of Wayne Verhein will take place on Saturday, April 30, 2016 from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM at Mickelson Funeral Service. Shawano AmVets Post #10 will perform full military honors at the funeral home at 12:00 PM. Inurnment will take place at Lake Drive Cemetery at a later date.
