David Martin Dowdell was born Feb 1830 Biloxi, MS to Robert B. and Sarah Dowdell. He married Middie Adeline Hester 23 Nov 1853 Biloxi, MS. He emigrated with his family to Texas about 1861. David enlisted 5 Apr 1862 in Alto, Cherokee, TX by W. B. Ochiltree for 3 years. The number of miles to rendezvous (San Antonio) was listed as 100 miles. He served as 4 Corp, Co. A, Ochiltree's Reg't 18th Texas Infantry. On 13 Oct 1862, he was promoted to Corp of the Guard. He was wounded in the Battle of Mansfield 8 Ap 1864.On 13 Oct 1864, he is shown on furlough from General Hospital. 25 Apr 1865 He was dropped from the rolls for dessertion (he overstayed his furlough). After he returned, he was demoted to a Pvt. David died 14 Mar 1870 Wells, Cherokee Co., TX and is buried in Parks Cemetery.
