Ithaca: Ellen Earle Humphrey passed away peacefully at Kendal at Ithaca Sat., Feb 19, 2011, with family at her side. She was born in Worcester, MA on Sept. 12, 1924 to Thomas and Ellen Earle. She graduated from the Bancroft School in Worcester as class valedictorian. She later attended Smith College and transferred into the Cadet Nursing Corp at Cornell University - NY Hospital School of Nursing. She met Henry, the love of her life, there and married a short time later. Henry and Ellen moved to Ithaca where they raised their five children. Her family was her pride and joy and her life revolved around it. She was always active and involved in their lives. She enjoyed her involvement in her PEO chapter, the Presbyterian Church, and was an active member of the LBS board of the McGraw House. She is survived by Henry, her husband of 64 years; a brother, John Earle of Yonkers, NY; and a sister, Alice Sumner of Concord, NC. Her children include Jon of Ithaca, Bruce and his wife Marcia of Norwell, MA, Steve and his wife Tara of Lowell, MA, daughter, Ellen and her husband Don Stewart of Vero Beach, FL, and son, Peter and wife Essie of New Hartford, CT; and many grand and great-grandchildren. Services will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospicare of Tompkins County or to Family & Children's Service of Ithaca. The family is being assisted by the Wagner Funeral Home.
