Mabel de Clare was the daughter of Roger de Clare, 2nd Earl of Hertford, 5th Lord of Clare, 5th lord of Tonbridge, 5th Lord of Cardigan (1116–1173) by his wife Mathilde de Saint Hilaire (1112-1193), daughter of James de Saint Hilaire, Baron of Field Dalling (1097-1154). She married Nigel de Mowbray (1146-1191) and had seven children by that marriage.
