He was born at Boston, gradated from Harvard (1805) and practised law for ten years before going into business with his first cousin, Nathaniel Greene Carnes (1792-1879). F. & N.G. Carnes were importers of luxury goods, notably French and Chinese fabrics etc. In 1816, Francis married his first wife and they were the parents of three children. By the time his second child was born, they were living in Paris but he returned to the States after Emmeline's death in 1821. After marrying his second wife, Emma E. Osgood, of New York, in 1828, he returned with her to Paris. They had one son, Edwin, who was born in Paris, and a daughter, Isabel, who married the artist Frederic Edwin Church and they built Olana. He died at Dayton, Ohio.
