On April 4, 2016, Edith Vanderburg entered heaven. Though she had long yearned to see the faces of her Savior and her loved ones there, the passing of her daughter, Joyce, on March 23, irresistibly drew her heart to those shores.

Edith’s earthly journey began on April 9, 1925, in Norfolk Virginia. She was welcomed by her parents, Carl and Helen Olson Werner, and a sister, Louise. Edith’s father was a career Navy officer, and Edith enjoyed her childhood of travel. Wherever her father’s career took them, Edith delighted in opportunities to sing and dance and to marvel at the natural beauty around her.

On a Sunday morning in 1944, in San Diego CA, Edith glanced down the staircase at her church to see her mother talking to a handsome young marine. He had the most beautiful smile she had ever seen. She wrangled an introduction, and on June 10, 1945, she happily married that man, Neil Vanderburg. It was the beginning of sixty-eight loving years together.

Edith and Neil settled in La Mesa CA, where their first four children were born, then in 1955 they moved to Corvallis OR, where they began living out their dreams in the country. Their two youngest children were born there. Nothing pleased Edith more than to be surrounded by her family. Summers were best, when the children were home and everyone worked and played together in the fields and gardens.

After the children were grown, Edith and Neil moved to Independence OR. There Edith spent summers creating beautiful flower gardens, and during the winter months she and Neil enjoyed traveling and rock hounding. As declining health set in, they simply enjoyed one another. In 2012 they returned to Corvallis, to a home where family members were better able to provide their care.

Edith was preceded in death by her husband, Neil; daughter, Joyce Commons; son-in-law Thomas Commons; and two grandchildren, Jessica Houck and Laurilee Commons. Those family members remaining will miss Edith deeply: Carol Bolster, her husband, Duane, and their children Brian Bolster, Lisa Morgan, and Julie McGeorge; David Vanderburg, his wife, Janece, and their son, Nathan Vanderburg; Mary Stone, her husband, Jack, and their children Anna Smith and Peter Stone; Pauline Houck, her husband, Doug, and their children Micah Houck and Rachel Houck; and Dawn Winokur and her children, Benjamin Winokur and Josiah Winokur; plus eight great grandchildren.
