Jerry was born in Alma, Neb., on May 11, 1935, to Nicholas & Aletha Macken. His family moved to Tulelake in 1939.

He graduated from Malin High School in 1953. After that, he then attended Oregon Tech for a couple years before enlisting in the Army in 1955. After his discharge, he continued his life-long career in farming.

He also enjoyed visiting friends at the Malin Diner, Pappa T's and the Captain Jack Stronghold Cafe. He also loved playing Santa Claus for many years at the Malin Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony.
