October 16, 1940 - March 27, 2016
Known as "Tootsie" to her family and friends, Alita Jean (Haynes) Kershner was raised with her siblings in Walton, Oregon on the Wildcat. Her ancestors settled in the western Lane County area in the early 1890s, with Haynes Creek named for the family.
Tootsie first attended the 2-room school house in the Chickahomny area. Then she went to school at Globe before attending both Walton and Elmira High School.
When Tootsie was just 17 years old, she met met a young sailor. He'd come to the area to go deer hunting when he saw a pretty young girl and they were instantly smitten with each other. Just four months later, in January of 1958, they were married in Elmira at the Church of Christ. While they were just young kids at the time, she has been the love of his life.
Tootsie was active in her church. One of her other interests was family history and she enjoyed documenting and sharing her collection of family and Walton-area photographs. She was a volunteer for Find-A-Grave. She loved her family and was proud of her children and by her grandchildren, all of whom will miss her dearly.
On Easter Sunday, March 27th, Tootsie passed away at the age of 75. She was survived by her husband, one son, three daughters and grandchildren.
In addition to her family, Tootsie left behind a host of friends. She is dearly missed by all who had the joy of knowing her. She enriched the lives of everyone she met. Hers was a life well-lived.
