One of the leading American publishers of the 20th century, founder of Alfred A. Knopf, Inc.
The first book published by the firm was 4 PLAYS, by Emile Augier, printed by the Plimpton Press. The firm expanded rapidly over the next few years. In 1916, the firm published 29 books. The firm garnered its prestige not only from the its list of authors, but from the physical quality of the books it published.

Cause of Death: Congestive heart failure.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

ALFRED KNOPF
(This name means 'BOOKS"
to countless authors as
well as readers!)

Knopf was a highly
successful book
publisher and an
author himself.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alfred was the SON of
FATHER - Samuel Knoph
(advertising businessman)
MOTHER - Ida Knopf
(worked in family firm)
He had at least one sibling
BROTHER - (?)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Alfred planed early in his
life to be an attorney. Upon
talking with a friend in England,
we went into publishing - first
in college, then as a young man.

He was well noted for having a
personal knowledge - and often a
friendship - with many of his
published authors.

Upon his son leaving the family
publishing company to start his
own business, Knopf became
distressed regarding how his
company would be handled following
his demise. He made a special buy-
out agreement with RANDOM HOUSE -
who allowed him an editorship for
many years. The entire business was
finally bought out by a larger
conglomerate.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ECHO PARK preservationist...
Knopf was instrumental in
helping prevent a dam from
being built - a little
recognized 'good deed'! He
helped to save the dramatic
canyon lands upstream.
Knopf was so impressed with
a trip seeking preservation
he published a special book
called:
"THIS IS DINASOUR".
It was a collection of essays
(one of which he authored himself)
and photographs. Alfred A. Knopf
made sure every member of the
U.S. Congress got a copy. Surely
this special edition swayed a few
opinions!
