Born in Detroit, MI, he was the son of the late Pauline Theodosia Phelps Pitts and Peter Mellette Pitts, Jr.
Robert served his country during World War II as a member of the US Navy. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Lawrence Institute of Technology and went on to become a civil engineer. After working with the Wayne County Road Commission, he started his own surveying company, Arpee Co., Inc.
Robert was currently a member of the Pleasantburg Rotary Club, Past President of the Greenville East Rotary Club, former member of the Plymouth Rotary Club in MI and a member of the Michigan Society of Land Surveyors. He served with numerous organizations over the years including Hospice Care in MI, Meals on Wheels for over 18 years, and as an usher at the Greenville Little Theater alongside his wife for 15 years. Robert was also a stained glass artist.
In addition to his wife of over 70 years, he is survived by one daughter, Lorene McVey, and her husband, Paul, of MI; two sons, Jeffery Carl Pitts, and his wife, Judy, of MI, and Kenneth Peter Pitts, and his wife, Lisa, of MO; six grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.
