Ralph Gerald Markham, 71, of Thaxton, passed away suddenly on Sunday, April 24, 2016.

He was born in Roanoke and grew up in Vinton, Virginia. His father, Ralph Lewis Markham, one of the founders of Markham Mill in Stewartsville, passed away when Gerald was very young. He credits his stepfather, the late Julian McManaway, as the Dad who raised him.

Gerald Retired from Norfolk and Southern Railway as a machinist for over 30 years.

He was a lifelong member of Vinton Baptist Church, and enjoyed his Sunday School Class there.

Every day he met his buddies at the Vinton McDonalds, and he faithfully visited his mother in the nursing home.

Gerald loved watching racing, never missing a race on TV, and using his skills as a machinists and mechanic built and maintained his son’s race car.

He especially loved his family, and his survivors include; his beloved wife of 37 years, Cynthia Nelson Markham. His mother, Beatrice “Bea” Dearing Markham Johnson of Roanoke. His sons; Ralph Gerald “R.G.” Markham II and his wife, Robin, Aaron Nelson Markham and his wife Stacey, all of Roanoke. Brother-in-law, James Nelson, Jr., of Hardy. And his Shih Tzu, Reesey “his baby girl”. Cherished cousins and numerous friends, especially J. R. Overstreet.

The family would like to thank Montvale Rescue Squad and Bedford Memorial Hospital for their care.

A celebration of his life will be held 12:00 noon on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel. Dr. Bill Booth will officiate and interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel.
