"The death of Dr. William H. McDonald, a practicing dentist in this village for 45 years until his retirement two years ago, passed away at 11:20 p. m. on Monday at the Clark Nursing Home in Oneonta where he had been a patient for the past two weeks. He had been in ill health for some time. Dr. McDonald was 72 years of age. He was born in Middlefield Center on February 22, 1883, a son of the late Thomas and Margaret (Burke) McDonald. Shortly after the turn of the century, the family moved to Cooperstown where the future dentist attended Cooperstown High School from which he graduated in 1905. After high school, he went to work as an assistant to the late Dr. Ernest L. Pitcher at his office on the second floor of the block at the northwest corner of Main and Pioneer Streets. It is now occupied by the latter's son, Dr. Leroy E. Pitcher. Apparently the dental profession appealed to the young man, because he enrolled at the College o Dental and Oral Surgery in New York City (it was later incorporated into Columbia University) and took his DDS degree ... Dr. McDonald never married. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Hattie M. Garlow of this village; three nieces, Miss Edna I. Garlow, Miss Ina M. Garlow, and Mrs. Louis E. Clouthier, all of this village; a nephew, C. Warren Cooper, also of this village; and two grandnieces and a grand nephew. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Ingalls Funeral Home on Chestnut Street with the Rev. Walter R. Graig, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery." [The Freeman's Journal (Cooperstown, NY), July 13, 1955, Page 5]
