Miss Sheryl Lynn Payne, age 56, of Sugar Hill, GA passed away on October 11, 2006. Surviving are: Parents: James DeForrest Payne, and Elaine I. Payne, Sugar Hill, GA; Sister and Brother-in-Law: Kathy Payne Gent and husband Floyd Gent, Wellesley, MA; Brother and Sister-in-Law: James DeForrest Payne, Jr. and wife, Lynn Beeson Payne, Elberton, GA; Aunts: Jeannette Pelot, Buford, GA, Wanslie Ivey Poole, and husband Grady L. Poole, Clarkesville, GA; Uncle: Joe Ivey, Fayetteville, GA; Several cousins. Sheryl was born on January 31, 1950 in Fulton County, GA. She was a 1969 graduate of Therrell High School in Southwest Atlanta. She was employed with the Buford's Kroger Store. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Buford, GA.
A Sugar Hill woman died from injuries sustained in a Wednesday afternoon car crash.
Sherry Payne, 56, was a passenger in a 1999 Jeep Cherokee when it collided with a 2004 Dodge 1500 truck at the intersection of Buford Highway and Commerce Drive.
The collision occurred at about 4:40 p.m. Wednesday.
Police said the 2004 Dodge was traveling south on Buford Highway and the Jeep west on Commerce.
Witnesses say the Jeep had the green light when the two vehicles collided, said Cpl. Darren Moloney, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Police Department.
When struck, the Jeep overturned and collided with another truck, a 2005 Dodge 1500.
The driver of the 2004 Dodge, identifed as Juan Carlos Chaparro, 43, of Jefferson, will face charges of failing to obey the traffic control device and homicide by vehicle in the second degree, both misdemeanors, Moloney said.
This is the 60th traffic fatality in Gwinnett County in 2006. There were a total of 81 in 2005.
"There doesn't appear to be any alcohol or drugs involved, just a lack of attention from driver number one (Chaparro)," Moloney said.
The father of the deceased, D. James Payne, 77, of Sugar Hill, was the driver of the Jeep.
He and Sherry Payne were transported to Gwinnett Medical Center, where Payne
later died.
Everyone else involved, including the driver and passenger in the 2005 Dodge, 28-year-old Nicholas Brian Hewatt of Winder and his 4-year-old son, did not need medical attention.
Moloney said everyone involved was wearing a seat belt.
Although D. James Payne survived the collision, no information about his condition was available at press time Thursday night.
