CHICOPEE -- Linda C. Baker, 98, of 64 Sanford St., a registered nurse dedicated to her profession, her church and public service for most of her life, died Thursday in Holyoke Solders Home.

A descendant of one Chicopee's oldest families, Miss Baker was born Oct. 11, 1883.

Miss Baker was honored in 1969 for 60 years of community service by Chicopee Chapter, Red Cross, and the Chamber of Commerce.

She was recognized for her work as a nurse in the Army in World War I and Chicopee Health Department, her devotion to the First Congregational Church, and volunteer work for Chicopee Chapter of the Red Cross.

Miss Baker attended local schools, including the Little Red Schoolhouse, a Chicopee Street landmark, and was graduated from Wheatland College, Norland College and Rochester General Hospital, New York.

After serving private duty, she enlisted as a nurse in the Army in World War I. She joined the local Health Department in 1927, serving as a communicable disease nurse for 26 years until she retired in 1953 at the age of 70.

Miss Baker was active throughout her life in the First Congregational Church and was the oldest member of this historic church at the time of her death. She was an officer or member of the church standing committees and its women's groups during her life.

She was active in the Red Cross blood bank program and was chairman of nursing services.

She was a life member of Charles C. Kennedy American Legion Post 275 and World War I Veterans Barracks 354.

She leaves a nephew, Henry H. Baker of Westfield.

The funeral will be Tuesday morning in the church with burial at the convenience of the family.
