Blackowl was born July 26, 1935 in Lawton and died Monday at Silvercrest Manor Nursing Home in Anadarko. He was of Cheyenne and Arapaho descent and attended the Fort Sill and Concho Indian Schools and St. Patrick's Mission School in Anadarko. He served 12 years in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He later worked as a carpet and tile installer. He lived in the Apache and Anadarko areas all his life and was a member of the Apache Reformed Church and the Redbone Blackfeet Society.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and five half-brothers.
Survivors include one son, Gerald F. Blackowl of Oklahoma City; one daughter, Mary Faye Blackowl of Albuquerque, N.M.; one sister, Lula Jean Smith of Anadarko; and two aunts, Ida Attocknie Asah of Apache and Gertrude Lefthand of Anadarko.
Burial will be in the Cache Creek Indian Cemetery west of Apache under direction of the Crews Funeral Home of Apache.
