Cathy was born in Devine, Texas, on the family farm. Her Daddy always had to go into town with each of the kids to get Dr. Woods to come out. Honey (Cathy's mother) said they usually paid him with goods (i.e. hay, pigs, etc.) That's the life of a country doctor. The family had to sell the farm in 1954 because of a long drought and the crops wouldn't grow. Earnest was farming partly for the government to pay the mortgage on the farm, but the family had to sell the farm and moved to Costa Mesa, California, where Cathy grew up and met her husband, Pete. They were married June 18, 1966, and had two wonderful children and two terrific grandchildren.

Cornelia became “Cathy” when she was 13 years old, as Cornelia was too hard for people in southern California to remember. Earnest didn't like it much as he told Cathy that he named her after the two women he loved the most; his mother and hers. Cathy thought that was sweet, and Cornelia remained her legal name, but Earnest got used to calling her Cathy after a while.

Cathy and Pete lived in Costa Mesa until 1973, when they moved to Beaverton, Oregon. Their children grew up in Beaverton. Then in 1991, they moved to Clearwater, Florida. Cathy worked for the Beaverton School District in Oregon for 16 years as a secretary, and then in Florida she worked for the Pinellas County School System for 14 years as a secretary until she retired in 2005. Cathy said: “Since I never planned to work (and only went to work because I was bored at home without my kids), I did OK.”

Cathy’s favorite things were babies, and she volunteered at the hospital nursery and at the pregnancy center.
