Mary Wicks Bennett, a former Shaker, was the wife of D. M. Bennett, the 19th century's most controversial publisher and American free-speech martyr. In 1873, the couple founded The Truth Seeker in Paris, Illinois. (Mrs. Bennett chose the name The Truth Seeker for their freethought periodical.) The following year the Bennetts moved to New York City where The Truth Seeker continued publication for nearly a century.
