HEREFORD - L.D. Combs, 88, of Hereford died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006.

Private graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Rest Lawn Cemetery with Thane Wright, grandson, officiating. Arrangements are by Hereford Heritage Funeral Home.

L.D. was born Oct. 8, 1918, in Paradise to Lilbern D and Mary A. Mann Combs. The family moved to Hayden, N.M., in 1923. He attended school in Hayden, playing basketball, which he enjoyed doing. They moved to Clayton, N.M., after the death of his father.

L.D. married Velna Behimer in 1940. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his discharge, he started driving a truck, which he did until he went to work for CIG in 1950. He retired after 35 years with the company. After his retirement, they moved to Hereford, where his wife died in 1987. L.D. later married Thama Pearson in 1994 at Hereford. He loved to play the guitar and played with a local band.

He was preceded in death by his first wife; his parents; two sisters; and a granddaughter.

Survivors include his wife, Thama; two daughters, Conny Whitehorn of Hereford and Carol Brewer Roos of Leadville, Colo.; a son, Tony Pearson of Hobbs, N.M.; a sister, Margie Hartwig of Hereford; a brother, Robert Combs of New York, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity or to Destiny Whitehorn's medical benefit fund at Hereford State Bank, 212 E. Third St., Hereford, TX 79045 or Hereford Federal Credit Union, 330 Schley, Hereford, TX 79045.
