LaVern was born in Morgan Township at his home to Frank and Bertha Waller Lemke. He graduated from Dows High School in 1931 and worked for farmers before farming for himself. On Nov. 25, 1937, he married Johanna Gerzema in Des Moines and they continued to farm near Dows. He retired in 1976 and moved to their present home in Hampton in 1987. He was a member of the Morgan United Methodist Church where he held several offices, taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and the Morgan Quartet. As a young man he sang solos for weddings and funerals.
He is survived by a son, Dennis Lemke and his wife, Avon, of Dows; four daughters, Darlene Bucholz and husband, Darold, of St. Augustine, Ill., Judy Gorder of Dows, Linda Kidney and husband, John, of Webster City, Nancy Kornfeld and husband, Tom, of Greenville, S.C.; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Johanna, in April, 1999; seven brothers; five sisters; and one grandson.
The Elledge Funeral Home of Dows was in charge of arrangements.
