George William Yocam was born in Ripley County, Indiana in 1799; his family traces back to Heinrich Jochem, born 1621 in Germany. George was the son of John Yocum (1744-1840), who fought in the Revolutionary War, and Mary Downing (abt. 1747- 1839). (Note: some records identify George as "George W. Yocam Sr.", though this is inaccurate - as his son was named George Washington Yocam.) It is likely that George William Yocam went by "William" as land grants for him are made out to that name. Also note that George William Yocam spelled his last name YOCAM, whereas his father apparently spelled it YOCUM - as many family descendants do, as well as YOCOM and other variations all deriving from the German Jochem.

George married Catherine "Kate" Mongtomery in Ripley County, Indiana on July 20, 1826; Kate was the daughter of Joseph Montgomery (1768-1842) and Jane Sproule Montgomery (1780-1842). Her Montgomery family can easily be traced back to the 1500s in Ireland and Scotland. The Montgomery family descendants have been recorded in the large volume "A Genealogical History of the Montgomerys and Their Descendants" by David B. Montgomery, 1908, which includes Catharine, her husband George Yocam and their children.

By 1830, George and Catharine were living in Clay County, Missouri and acquired a land grant that year in what would become Weston Township, Platte County, Missouri in 1837 - though before the Platte Purchase it was called a "district." In 1844 the Yocams had settled further north in the fertile farmland of the Platte Purchase. George and Kate acquired either a quarter section or part of a quarter-section northwest of Bean Lake, near the Buchanan County line and just east of the Missouri River. This land would later be split up among many heirs, as well as in sales and legal disputes. A 48 acre section of this land, at the northwest corner of the quarter-section, was purchased by my great grandparents Napoleon B. "Tone" Turpin and Catherine Jane YOCAM Turpin from George and Martha America YOCAM Vosse; my grandfather Granville Turpin inherited this land (on which he was born) and had it farmed until he sold it in 1969 - the year before his death. As a child in the 1950s, I visited the old Yocam farm a number of times with my grandfather.

George William Yocam died Feb. 8, 1871 per family records (Paxton's "Annals of Platte County" give year of death as 1870) in Marshall Township, Platte County, Missouri and was buried in the Yocam family cemetery northeast of the farm in the Missouri River bluff just south of the Buchanan-Platte County line.

Following his death, Catharine lived nearly a quarter-century longer in Platte County. She is buried in the Yocam family cemetery.
