Della Cora Hays was the daughter of John W. Hays and Emmaline "Emily"Jane Davis. She was born while the family was living in Dade County but grew up and spent the rest her life on the 80-acre farm southwest of Miller, in Lawrence County, Missouri.

James T. DePriest (28) of Miller and Cora D. Hays (17) of Miller were married March 15, 1897 by her maternal grandfather, Elder William Riley Davis, Minister of the Gospel, at his residence in Heatonville, southeast of Miller in Lawrence County, Missouri.

James and Della had two sons, Marcelus Emil (1898-1980) and James Trenton (1899-1984) DePreste. Our unique spelling of the surname came from Della's rendering of the surname in her Bible, but the official recorded marriage record reflects the more correct and most commonly found spelling of DePriest. (Another unique spelling of the surname can also be found as DuPriest, most commonly found in the southern areas of the United States.)

After the death of her first husband James DePreste (who died of a fever in 1899), Della was remarried on December 17, 1901 in Mt. Vernon, Lawrence County, Missouri to Jesse Thomas Robb, Jr. They had three children, Vida Mae, Everett Elmer, and Lora Ethel Robb. To my knowledge, personally and from others, their children were well liked and highly regarded.

By several accounts, Della and Jesse's marriage became acrimonious and problematic due to Jesse's controlling, overbearing and untrustworthy behaviors. After Della divorced Jesse Robb, he was remarried to Pearl Edna Clark. Jesse and Pearl are buried at Park Cemetery in Carthage, Jasper County, Missouri.

Della was married lastly on November 20, 1924 to Norman "Norm" Beckley Garver. By all accounts, including my own parents who knew him, and my siblings and I who spent time visiting with him in the 1960's at the Veteran's Home in Grand Island, Nebraska, he was a dear and loving person to her and her children and grandchildren.

A much beloved Della died of Nephritis (of long duration) and contributory Uremia on February 15, 1937 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri. Services were provided by Morris & Leiman Undertaker, in Miller, Lawrence County, Missouri. Grandma Dell was buried next to her first husband, James Timothy DePreste at Davis Cemetery, southeast of Miller near Heatonville, in Lawrence County, Missouri.

Norm stayed on at the farm for eight years after Della's death, then sold the farm to her grandson and his wife, Paul and Evalina "Evelyn" (Hook) DePreste and moved into the town of Miller. Some years later, Norm moved into the Veteran's Home in Grand Island, Nebraska. At his death, Norman was buried near his parents at Nelson Cemetery in Nuckolls County, Nebraska.

..Funeral services were conducted at the Miller Christian Church at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon of last week for Mrs. Della Garver who passed away at the St. John's hospital in Springfield Feb. 15th after an illness of only a week's duration.
Mrs. Garver, who was born Della Cora Hays, spent her entire life in this community. She was born on a farm southwest of town 57 years ago. She lived a life of unselfish service to others.
