Marvin E. Altenburg passed away on May 6, 2016 at the age of 92. He was born on November 8, 1923 in Detroit, son of Leo and Bertha (Nee Hentschel) Altenburg. Leo was raised by his mother alone during the Great Depression as his father was killed shortly after being shot at the family's shoe store.

Marvin enlisted in the United States Army in 1942, serving under General Eisenhower in General Patton's 3rd Armored Division. He served from the Normandy Invasion until the end of the war receiving numerous medals and ribbons. While enlisted, Marvin married Johanna Reichenbach on September 18, 1943 in Detroit, Michigan.

Marvin was employed as an engineer for the Michigan Bell Telephone Company from 1944 until retiring in 1983 after 42 years of dedicated work.

Mr. Altenburg was a many of strong faith who would attend church every Sunday and pray before bed every evening. He was active with St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Eastpointe. He sang in the Senior Choir and Men's Chorus. He was the Sunday School Superintendant for 15 years, served several years as Vice-President and President of the congregation, and was Co-Chairman of the Building Committee for the present edifice.

Marvin was on the St. Thomas baseball team for nearly 50 years, was a Mell Ott League baseball coach, and was active in the Boy Scouts. He also coached in the Harper Woods Little League for years.

Marvin is a past President of the Greater Detroit Junior Walther League and a past President of the Greater Detroit Sunday School Association. He served on the Libray Expansion Committee at Concordia College in Ann Arbor. He served as President of the Lutheran Luncheon Club of Metro Detroit in 1988, and chaired the Lutheran Layman of the Year Committee in 1989. He was Lutheran Layman of the year of Metro Detroit in 1990.

Marvin's biggest love in life was his family. He was predeceased by his loving wife Johanna in 2008. He was proud of his daughters Eileen (John) Gerlach, Marilyn (Dale) Edwards, Terri (Douglas) LeBeau; and son Keith (Liesa). He will be missed by his 15 loving grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Monday from 5:00 until 9:00 pm and Tuesday from 2:00 until 9:00 pm at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Ave., at Vernier Rd., Grosse Pointe Woods. He will lie instate on Wednesday from 10:00 am until the time of the funeral at 11:00 am at St. Thomas Lutheran Church, 23801 Kelly Rd., Eastpointe. Reverend Mark Hetzner will officiate. Marvin will be interred next to his beloved Johanna at Forestlawn Cemetery in Detroit.
