DEATH OF MRS. J. C. DEER
Mrs. Elizabeth Mercy Deer, wife of Jefferson C. Deer, died Saturday evening at the Methodist hospital in Indianapolis, where she had been critically ill since October 2nd, when she underwent an operation. She had been in failing health for several months.
Mrs. Deer was the daughter of George W. and Sarah Demaree, and was born in Union township, April 18, 1850.
She was the youngest of six children and the last survivor of her father's family. At the age of thirteen she was left an orphan and was reared in the home of her sister, Mrs. J. M. Bone.
At an early age she became a member of the Shiloh Presbyterian church, but after her marriage she united with the Providence Christian church.
On December 9, 1869, she was joined in marriage to Jefferson C. Deer. They moved to a farm south west of Providence, where they resided until November 1900, when they moved to Franklin. Upon her removal to that city her church membership was transferred to the Franklin Christian church.
Besides her husband, she is survived by three children, Orion L., of this city, Mrs. Everett L. Deer of Providence, and Gilbert D., now in the U.S. service, and by six grandchildren.
Mrs. Deer's life was an open book, which to her husband, children, grandchildren, neighbors and friends needs no interpretation, said a friend of the family today.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two o'clock at the Franklin Christian church, conducted by the Rev. A. L. Ward. A quartet composed of Miss Clara Margaret Jennings, Mrs. Austin Flinn, Oral Barnett and Clarence McDonald, furnished music. Burial was in Greenlawn, the casket bearers being L. A. Young, George W. Wyrick, H. A. Payne, Jesse Ellis, George I. White and Joseph Simpson.
