The Philadelphia Almshouse (written as "Alms House" in death records) was built in 1732 to provide hospital care for the poor. It was closed circa 1834 and moved to 11th & Spruce streets. It was replaced by the Blockley Almshouse (there is a Blockley Cemetery) in 1834. The burial ground was located on Carpenter Street and was built upon in the 1850's. The graves were never moved and lie today under the construction of the area.
