He married the love of his life, Clarine Murphy, on February 23, 1947, in Shreveport, Louisiana. They celebrated 68 years together. Doc had a long career in the oil industry while working for Stanolind Oil and Gas which later became Amoco Production. He spent most of his 33 years with Amoco at the South Fullerton Plant outside of Andrews.

Doc enjoyed collecting and restoring classic, antique, and special interest cars. They traveled all over the U.S. attending car shows where he entered his collection, including a 1937 Cord Phaeton, 1931 Model A Ford Roadster, 1948 Lincoln Continental, 1925 Buick, 1936 Mercedes replica and numerous military vehicles.

Doc and Clarine were active in local and national car clubs including the Antique Automobile Association of America. They were members of the CAF Desert Squadron in Odessa, Means Memorial United Methodist Church, and were very active at the Andrews Senior Center. Doc's greatest enjoyments were time spent with family, socializing with car buddies, and guitar picking with his friends.
