Chancy Bohannon, Able Architect and Contractor, Taken by Pneumonia

One of Ada's best loved citizens., Chancy J. Bohannon, lost his battle with pneumonia Monday, in spite of the most determined efforts of friends and the best medical science. He had been ill since last November, pneumonia finally developing after two relapses with influenza.

Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon from the M.E. church, conducted by Rev. W.N. Shank, assisted by Dr. A.E. Smith and Dr. D.H. Bailey. The body lay in state at the church form 1 to 2 p.m. The K. of P. Lodge conducted the service at Woodlawn.

An able architect and successful contractor, Mr. Bohannon has helped to build and improve scores of properties in Ada and community and his work stands as a splendid monument to his ability. He had many projects on hand at the time of his last illness.

But far more important than his professional ability was his radiant character, winning and holding hundreds of friends, and bringing good cheer and aid to the sick and needy. His life was exemplary of the principles of brotherhood taught by the lodge, of which he was for years an active members. A true index to his character is found in his love for children, many of whom he held as fast friends.

Chancy Bohannon was born in Orange Township, eight miles north of Ada, on March 24, 1871. He departed this life on May 28, 1923, at the age of 52 years, 2 months and 4 days.

After spending his boyhood on the farm, he learned the carpenter trade at Findlay and studied architecture there for several years. Later he was employed in building construction at various places over the state. While on one of these contracts, he met his wife, then Miss Daisy Johnson, at Marion.

For many years after coming to Ada, he was actively associated with H.R. Butler in the Ada Coal and Lumber Co, until their plant was purchased by the Slagle Lumber Co.

He was long a worker in the M.E. church and the K. of P. Lodge.

Surviving are his wife, who has tenderly ministered to him in this illness, and one brother, Edward, of New York, who has also been at his bed side.

Friends and relative from far and near filled the M.E. church yesterday afternoon. The funeral was the largest since that of Dr. Lehr. Pallbearers were C.W. Brecheisen, Frank Allen, L.A. McElroy, H.J. Sousley, J.D. Judkins and L. C. Povenmire.
