Fireman Falls to Death from Span
Stanley Kava, Skull Crushed and Body Frozen, Found Beneath Bridge

Stanley Kava, 34, fireman with engine company No. 21, 33rd and K Street, was found dead early Wednesday morning at the foot of the L street viaduct, with the back of his skull crushed, and hands and face frozen.

Apparently, he had been dead for hours.

Police believe he inadvertently stepped off one end of the viaduct which si (sic) is being dismantled, or fell through a hole in the flooring, to the ground below, striking on his head. Death probably was instantaneous.

Kava was last seen alive around 10:30 Tuesday night, when he left St. Francis church, where he had been attending a committee meeting to go to his home. He never reached home.

Kava lived at 4513 South Twenty-seventh street. He is survived by his widow, Veronica, and six children—Florence, Rose, Statia, Frances, Benedict and Louis—a brother, Frank, of Omaha, and two other brothers, Jake and John, living in Poland; two sisters, Sophie and Mary, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Kava, all of Poland.

Kava came to South Omaha 13 years ago and had been a member of the fire department for 10 years.
