MOUNT VERNON: PAUL DAVID GOOSSENS, age 82, of Mount Vernon, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday May 10, 2016 at Grant Medical Center in Columbus.

Paul was born March 30, 1934 in Mount Vernon, Ohio to Ernest and Nellie (Tasher) Goossens. Paul married Lareta Winand in 1955. Together they happily raised three children-Paula, David and Mark until Lareta's untimely death in 1979. They were members of Waterford United Methodist Church, where Paul was a pitcher for the church softball team for many years.

Paul graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1952. He worked at Cooper Bessemer as a draftsman until retiring in 1996.

Paul had a life-long interest in history, having an extensive knowledge of many periods in history, especially the Civil War. Paul was a member of the Knox County Agricultural Museum and enjoyed giving tours of their buildings at the Knox County Fairgrounds for many years. Paul was a huge fan of old westerns, particularly John Wayne movies and enjoyed antique tractors and steam engines.

Paul met and married Verdabelle Butler in 1981, and together they enjoyed hunting for antiques on many trips throughout Ohio and West Virginia. For the last nine years they were part owners of Farley and Moore Antiques and Collectibles in Mount Vernon. Paul and Vert also enjoyed trips to Put-In-Bay and Amish Country and visiting with their family and card club friends. Paul lost his "Vertie" in 2012, as well as a part of himself.

Paul is survived by, and will be deeply missed by sons David (Deb) Goossens of Fredericktown and Mark (Nancy) Goossens of Mount Gilead, daughter Paula Rogers of Mount Vernon, step-sons Michael (Sandy) Butler of Pittsburgh, Stephen Butler of Kansas City, David (Amy) Butler of Granville, and step-daughter Susan (Harold "Hersh") Long of Loudonville, grandchildren Chuck (Amanda) Rogers, Kenny (Candie) Rogers, Steve Rogers, Mitch Goossens, Lauren Goossens, and Jory (Diana) Thompson, step-grandchildren Brian (Amy) Banbury, Tiffany (Joshua) Campbell, Jeannine (Ryan) Gimbel, Jason Butler, Nicholas Butler, Luke Butler and Alex Knueven, and numerous great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wives, Paul was preceded in death by five sisters Elizabeth Taylor, Lillian Vail, Marie Hays, Allora Watson and Margaret Rogers and three brothers Jack Goossens, Fred Goossens and Irvin Goossens.

Friends may call Monday May 16, 2016 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio, 43050. A service celebrating the life of Paul D. Goossens will follow at 3 p.m. at the funeral home with celebrant Don Lockwood officiating. Private burial will be in Forest Cemetery in Fredericktown.
