He immigrated to the United States aboard the R.M.S. Abyssinia departing from Liverpool on 5 May 1871 and arriving in New York City at Castle Garden on 19 May 1871.
He was married to Ann Mary nee Flinn Breed in Towanda,Bradford County,PA. on 23 June 1873. Roger ,Ann and her young son, William Breed, made their way to Sullivan County,PA.,with Roger working as a Coal Miner at Barclay,Sullivan County. Roger and Ann were the parents of these known children:
~ William Breed Hampson, was unofficially adopted by Roger.
~ Richard Benjamin Hampson;
~ John Roger Hampson;
~ Ann Jennie Hampson;
~ Burton Daniel Hampson.
Pennsylvania State Bituminous Mine Inspector for 1881 to 1911.
He was appointed by Governor Henry M. Hoyt on 10 June 1881 for a 4 year term as the Mine Inspector of the 4th Bituminous Coal District,which consisted of all the mines located within Bradford, Tioga, Lycoming, Sullivan, Clinton, Centre,Potter,Huntington, Blair and Cambria counties,in Pennsylvania. There were 90 state regulated coal mines located within this district in 1881.In February of 1890 he briefly worked a Mine Foreman of the Mead Run Coal Mine located in Elk County, Pennsylvania.
He worked as the Foreman at the Mead Run mine which was owned by the Northwestern Mining & Exchange Company. Records indicate he stayed with them until 1892 and returned to work as a State appointed Mine Inspector.
In 1893 he was the Pennsylvania State Mine Inspector for the 10th Bituminous Coal Mining District,which consisted of the counties of Huntington, Fulton,Bradford & Blair;also those parts of Cambria,Clearfield & Indiana counties,which are adjacent to the Bell's Gap Railroad.
Roger was re-appointed as the Mine Inspector for the 4th District on 11 August 1885,by Pennsylvania Governor Robert E. Pattison.
By 1895,Roger and his family were living in Altoona, Blair County,PA,;where he was the State Mine Inspector for the 10th District.He was re-appointed State Mine Inspector for the 10th District in 1897 by Governor Daniel H. Hastings.
In late 1900,Roger and his family moved to Punxsutawney,Jefferson County.
In 1905-He accepted re- appointment as the State Inspector for the 12th District located in Jefferson County,PA.,by Governor Sam W. Pennypacker.
In December of 1907,he was one of a dozen State Mine Inspectors and officials from across the state who assisted in recovery and investigation efforts into the Darr Mine Disaster in Van Meter,Westmoreland County,PA.
He retired in 1911 from his position as Mine Inspector.
His wife Annie passed away 3 February 1915.
He married a second time to the widow, Lillian R. nee Wilson Boyd on 30 January 1918.
Roger Hampson passed away on 27 November 1920 at the Adrian Hospital in Punxsutawney.
He is buried at Circle Hill Cemetery with his 1st wife,Annie Flinn Hampson and his older sister,Ann Hampson Blundell.
