Joel Reece Bidwell was born Joel Reece Bedwell in Cumberland City, Stewart County, Tennessee. He was the son of John Burton Bedwell and Sarah Ann Wells Bedwell. At some point after leaving Tennessee, he changed the spelling of his name to Bidwell. He was married to Ludie Stuart 20 January 1912. They were the parents of four children.
