She later worked at the Simpson Paper Mill in Lowell, Washington where she met the love of her life, Chester Childs. They were married January 13, 1940, and celebrated 56 years of marriage before Chester's passing in 1996.
They later moved to Ballard, where they raised their two sons. Ragna prided herself on being a "stay at home" mom while raising her family. After her sons graduated from high school she obtained her real estate license and enjoyed a successful career in the rental market. Together Ragna and Chet owned, operated, and managed a number of apartment houses, as well as coin operated laundromats.
Ragna moved to Whidbey Island in 2011 to a house her son Lawrence and wife Gayle had built next door to their home. Lawrence & Gayle provided all her needs and enjoyed spoiling her with fresh caught crab and other favorites. In 2013 after falling and breaking her hip she moved to Careage.
With her Norwegian roots, she enjoyed cooking and baking some of the ethnic specialties like lefse. Her recipe for Norwegian Rye Bread was a favorite and has been lovingly passed down to her daughter-in-law Gayle. It is fondly named "Raggie's Rye Bread." Ragna & Chet both enjoyed playing golf and had a weekly game of pinochle with life-long friends.
Ragna is preceded in death by her husband Chester, son Harvey Childs, and her two sisters, Margaret Hofstee and Helen Helm.
She is survived by her son Lawrence Childs (Larry) and wife Gayle of Langley, Washington. Also survived by five grandchildren Jeffrey Childs (Shelia), Lorianne Drouin (Christopher), Michael Childs (Jennie), Jennifer Childs (Paul), and Christopher Childs (Amy). Ten great-grandchildren also survive her and were the joy of her life. She is also survived by five nieces and three nephews and their families. Several of her friends have already greeted her at heaven's gate, but there are several who remain.
Mom was truly a woman of faith. When recently asked what she attributes to her long life, without hesitation she responded "Faith in God." The fact that she passed away on the 20th anniversary of her husband's death is an amazing example of God's grace in her life.
