In 1980, George retired from the Civil Service at LAFB after 33 years of faithful service. He was an avid sportsman, woodcrafter and mechanic. He was fondly known as "G.W." or "Mac".

He is survived by his wife, Helon McFarlen; daughters, Patricia Moody and husband, Ken, of Greenville, Miss., Linda Sotelo and husband, Cesar, of McAllen, Texas, and Nancy Vignal and husband, Carl, of Lockhart, Texas; son, George McFarlen, Jr., of Del Rio, Texas; grandchildren, Meredith Blake Garvelli, Lisa Marie Sotelo, Cesar Sotelo, II, April Marie McFarlen, Victoria Kae McFarlen and Rebecca Lee Vignali; great-grandchildren, Joseph "Tony" Garvelli, Alexander Kay "Allie" Garvelli, and James "Garrett" Garvelli.
