BOWDEN, his wife, Lucy Betts HUGGINS, and their son, Alvis BOWDEN,are buried together on the Perrin lot (D32) at Oakdale Cemetery, Wilmington.Buried on the adjoining Bowden lot (D33) are Lucy and William Nicholas BOWDEN'S two daughters, Mary Emily, who died at age 11, and Kate, who died at age 8. These two BOWDEN children, who died only three days apart, were among the hundreds
of victims of an influenza epidemic that struck Wilmington so heavily in the winter of 1876. Lucy, Alvis and Theophilus Huggins Bowden were raised by their aunt Carolyn "Carrie" Bowden Hodges who did not have children of her own.
"The Morning Star", Wilmington, NC, 24 Jan 1884: "Died in this city the 23rd, Mrs. Lucy HUGGINS, wife of William N. BOWDEN. Funeral from the residence at 5th and Chestnut Sts., thence to the Front St. M.E. Church, thence to Oakdale Cemetery. She was the daughter of a Methodist minister."
