Born in Crittenden County, Arkansas, Carroll Cloar later attended Southwesten College in Memphis, the Memphis Acadamy of Arts, and the Art Student's League of New York. After traveling extensively in Europe and South America, he settled in Memphis where he continued his painting career until his death. He was the recipient of many awards and his paintings are in both museums and private collections. Many of Cloar's works depict scenes in Crittenden County, including his paintings "Gibson Bayou Anthology" and "Angel in a Field." Cloar was cremated and his ashes were scattered over a pasture he once loved — all that remains of his old homeplace.
