Theodore Scott "Ted" Painter was born in Whitebird, Idaho on December 20, 1916 to Frederick Painter and Lorena (Griffith) Painter.

Ted grew up with his many brothers and sisters in an environment that centered around his family's horses. Ted married Dorothy Lillian Cunningham on June 2, 1938 in Buhl, Idaho -- both Ted and Dorothy had attended college for a year or so, and had perhaps met there.

The couple first lived in Mullan, Idaho, where Ted had work as a miner. In 1941 they moved to Juneau, Alaska. They worked their way down the coast, first to Washington, and then to Oregon, arriving in Depoe Bay in 1943. From 1962 until 1977, Ted and Dorothy spent a season each year in Kodiak, Alaska where Ted worked as a commercial fisherman.

Ted and Dorothy raised two sons who took part in their many adventures.

Ted died on October 16, 1988, in Depoe Bay at the age of 71.
