Carole Kerr McClendon, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2016 in Oklahoma City. Carole was born on November 19, 1931, to Aubrey M. Kerr and Jewel Jordan Kerr in Ada, Oklahoma. Carole grew up in Ada, where she was an excellent student and a lovely, responsible young woman. She graduated from Ada High School in 1949 with high honors and was one of three girls selected to attend Girls State. In the Fall of 1949, Carole enrolled at the University of Oklahoma. While at OU, she joined her beloved Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and met a wonderful group of women who remained her lifelong friends. She served as President of KKG her senior year, and also represented the chapter at the KKG National Convention where, under her leadership, OU KKG was named National Chapter of the Year. In addition, she was named an OU Big Woman on Campus in 1952-53.After her graduation in 1953 with a degree in secondary education, she moved to Boston with two sorority sisters to teach school in nearby Milton. She loved her time on the East Coast, but because of a chance encounter with a handsome young man from Ada named Joe McClendon, she moved back to Oklahoma where she and Joe were married on July 8, 1954.Joe's career in the Army and later at Kerr-McGee kept the young couple on the move. Carole accepted the constant challenges of raising two boys in new towns with patience, kindness and grace, qualities for which she will always be remembered. During their first 10 years of marriage, Joe and Carole lived in El Paso, Ardmore, Dallas, Oklahoma City, Enid, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and St. Louis. From 1964 on, Joe and Carole happily resided in Oklahoma City.Upon their return to Oklahoma, Carole resumed her teaching career in 1966 at St. John's Episcopal Day School, where she taught half-day kindergarten for nine years. She never wanted to teach a full-day class because she felt it was very important to always be home when her two boys returned from school each day. Carole was a loving wife, terrific mother, excellent cook, expert bridge player, trusted household bookkeeper, enthusiastic traveling and camping companion to Joe, and a great and loyal friend to her family members, neighbors and college chums alike. From the age of seven until last year, Carole spent nearly every summer with her extended family enjoying the sandy beaches and clear waters of Minnesota's Pelican Lake.Carole was the epitome of a lady and had a wonderful way of making people feel at ease. She was a devout Christian her entire life. She loved the Lord and was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Ada. After her marriage, she was a member of various Methodist churches, most recently Nichols Hills Methodist Church. In addition, she was a member of the Pen and Quill Book Club, English Speaking Union, Oklahoma Art League, Meals on Wheels, and other local organizations. Carole also had a lifetime involvement with Kappa Kappa Gamma. She served on the KKG house board for many years and was selected as the Kappa Kappa Gamma Panhellenic Woman of the Year in 2004. Carole's greatest joy, however, was her role as Grammy to her three beloved grandchildren, all of whom she called, "angel child."Carole is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, Joe; her son, David Michael McClendon and his wife, Pam; her daughter-in-law, Katie McClendon; her three grandchildren, Jack McClendon and his wife, Whitney, Callie Katt and her husband, Tim, and Will McClendon; her first great-grandchild, Andrew Kerr Katt; her sister, Ann Kerr Crawford; her brother, Aubrey Kerr and his wife, Nancy; and her sisters-in-law, Mary Fletcher and Jean Lewis. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews with whom she engaged in constant hand-written letter communication over the years.Carole was preceded in death by her son, Aubrey Kerr McClendon; her parents, Aubrey and Jewel Kerr; and her sister, Margaret Kerr Boylan. The family greatly appreciates the exceptional care and compassion from the nurses and staff at Integris Hospice House.A Memorial Service celebrating Carole's life will be held Friday, May 27, 2016, at 11:00 AM at Nichols Hills United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: The Nichols Hills United Methodist Church Music Fund, 1212 Bedford Drive, Oklahoma City, OK 73116.
