WESTERN, SAMUEL WINSBOROUGH (son of Samuel R. Western and Ann Winsborough)., Born Dec. 4, 1843, Tiverton, Eng. Came to Utah Sept. 13, 1861, Homer Duncan company.

Married Sarah Ann Wood Jan. 29, 1866, Berryville, Washington Co., Utah (daughter of John Wood and Ellen Smith of Lehi, Virgin City and Grafton, Utah, pioneers 1853, Cyrus H. Wheelock company). She was born May 8, 1850.

Their children: Samuel W. b. May 10, 1867, m. Clara M. Phillips; John Henry b. March 13, 1869, m. Musetta Palmer; Sarah Ann b. Aug. 28, 1871, m. Isaac Alldredge, Jr.; Eliza Ellen b. March 10, 1874, m. Thomas L. Cropper; Lucy Jane b. Dec. 24, 1876, m. Joseph B. Dewsnup; Joseph Franklin b. Nov. 27, 1379, m. Jennie B. Palmer; Ernest b. July 21, 1882, died; Ruth b. Sept. 11, 1884, m. J. H. Durbin; Francis M. b. Dec. 15, 1887, m. Eva D. Black; Mary A. b. July 23, 1895, died.

Married Mary Alice Hutchinson May 24, 1884, Salt Lake City (daughter of James Hutchinson and Ellen Redmond), who was born April 26, 1866, Deseret.

PATRIARCH WESTERN DIES AT 94 YEARS

Funeral services will be held in the Deseret Ward Chapel Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. for Patriarch Samuel Western, aged 94, Utah pioneer who died early Tuesday morning. Mr. Western was born on December 4, 1843 at Cove, near Devonshire, England. At the early age of seven he began working, by the time he was seventeen he had saved enough money to immigrate to America. He arrived in New York in May 1861. He came west as far as the Missouri river by train and from there to Payson, Utah he drove an ox team for Thomas Odell. Mr. Western continued his trip by driving the oxen to Washington county, settling in Long Valley. In 1865, the Indians became troublesome, he with others were organized into a company under Captain John Berry. They fought an Indian battle in which two men were killed and Mr. Western brought the bodies to Grafton.

On January 22, 1866, he married Sarah Ann Wood. For many years they lived in Pioche, Nevada and moved to Deseret in 1877, where he took up the occupation of black smithing. Mr. Western married Mary Alice Hutchinson May 24, 1884. His first wife preceded him to the grave nine years ago. Surviving by his first marriage are six sons and daughters; Samuel W., John H., Marion Western and Mrs. Lloyd Cropper of Deseret, Mrs. Isaac Alldredge of St. George and Mrs. Howard Durbin of Salt Lake City. By his second marriage, the survivors are his widow, Mrs. Mary A. Western and eight sons and daughters, Alma Western, Hinckley; Mrs. L.W. Olson, Salt Lake City; Myron L. Western, Pocatello; Mrs. Phil S. Sapington, Idaho Falls and Jesse W., Ray, Gertrude and Bernice Western of Deseret.

Mr. Western served a two year mission to England in 1899, during 18 months of this time he was mission president. For over fifty years he was the Deseret choir leader. He was counselor to Bishop Black for many years and on Sep. 28, 1930 he was ordained a partriarch by Apostle George F. Richards. Mr. Western has been an active and devout member of the LDS church and was noted for his fine qualities, sterling manhood and integrity of life. Services will be conducted by Bp. Ralph Crafts at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Deseret cemetery. The many, many friends of this aged patriarch, mourn his passing and extend condolence to the family.
